OCEANIA
Energy Transition Information
Oceania, led by Australia, has consolidated its position as a global hydrogen and CCS hub. The 2024 National Hydrogen Strategy targets 15 Mtpa production by 2050, backed by the Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive (HPTI) and Hydrogen Headstart Program. Australia’s CCS portfolio is the most advanced outside Europe: Moomba CCS (Santos, operational Oct 2024) safely stored 1.3 Mt CO₂e in its first year of operations and received the largest single issuance of Australian Carbon Credit Units (614,133 ACCUs in Nov 2025). Gorgon CCS (Chevron, world’s largest operating facility) had stored >11 Mt CO₂ by July 2025. Two further hubs (Bayu-Undan ex-Darwin and Western Australia) target FID in 2025–2026 with first injection 2028. The Safeguard Mechanism reform (Jul 2023) requires ~219 large emitters to decline baselines at 4.9%/yr. New Zealand released its Hydrogen Action Plan in November 2024.
