Selmers sees beyond the machine
Selmers, known for its blasting and coating equipment, is taking a broader role in pipeline construction. The machine remains at the core, but Selmers increasingly considers how it performs within the full field environment. That means thinking through what contractors deal with daily: coordinating suppliers, operating in remote locations, and managing harsh conditions.
In collaboration with a leading EU pipeline constructor, Selmers explored how systems perform on site—in the mud, under pressure, with minimal margin for error. Selmers received industry recognition for its contributions to this sector, including an innovation award. Selmers also developed a system to log production data directly at the workstation. Depending on the setup, it records weld parameters, wire and gas consumption, pipe/joint ID numbers, coating specifications, blasting roughness, spillage, wear on parts, and outcomes of quality checks.
Spillage in particular is a concern. When blasting media ends up in surrounding soil, it can cause contamination and potential environmental claims. Logging such data gives contractors better insight and traceability, helping reduce liability if something goes wrong. Selmers’ approach reflects a subtle shift: from building stand-alone machines to supporting the full process—with tools that improve control and simplify operations.
