AVAX – West Macedonia high pressure hydrogen compatible project

The West Macedonia High Pressure Hydrogen-Compatible Pipeline is a major energy infrastructure project in Greece, developed by DESFA, the national gas transmission operator. It is a pioneering initiative, as it represents the first high-pressure pipeline in the country—and among the first in Europe—designed to be fully compatible with hydrogen, capable of transporting up to 100% hydrogen alongside natural gas.

As part of the wider European Hydrogen Backbone, the project contributes to the transition toward low-carbon energy systems while expanding gas access in Western and Central Macedonia. The pipeline extends approximately 95 km, with a diameter of 30 inches, connecting to the existing National Natural Gas Transmission System near Imathia and reaching north of Ptolemaida. It will supply multiple cities, including Edessa, Naousa, Veria, Florina, Kozani, and others, through metering and regulating stations. It will also support industrial demand, such as the Kardia cogeneration plant, and allow for future network extensions. A key challenge of the project is its route through mountainous terrain, requiring specialized construction techniques under difficult environmental conditions. Built with high-strength steel and in compliance with international hydrogen standards, the pipeline ensures safety and durability. Overall, the project strengthens energy security, improves regional connectivity, and lays the groundwork for integrating hydrogen into Greece’s future energy mix.
